    Topic: Students' Readiness for E-learning

Learning online turns out to be a trend in educational world nowadays. E-learning doesn’t just provide a bridge for connection between the education and the technology; meanwhile, it is a critical tool for cutting the cost of education and strengthening educational institutions’ ability dealing with the fast development of the emerging knowledge era. A lot of researches have been focused on readiness check for e-learning at the organizational level while some others pay attentions to faculty’s readiness evaluation in schools. But few articles are found on learners’ readiness exploration for e-learning.

Along with the popularization of Web 2.0, eLearning nowadays is regarded as eLearning 2.0,where functions such as RSS feeds,Wikis, social bookmarking, social networking are usually implemented. Digital generation are familiar with most of them in daily life but frequently using them in entertaining way rather than educational way. So the main purpose of this kind of study is to discover students' eLearning readiness before launching eLearning programme.

some literature review on this topic:

The learner's readiness for eLearning could be described as the extent to which learners are conducive to be prepared and willing to study in an elearning environment with other learners for the achievement of common learning goals, performing tasks in an accurate and reliable way. (Lee et al., 2007;Rosas and Camarinha-Matos,2008,pp.5,26,78)

Benson (2008) has conducted a survey on 650 respondents at a post 92 UK university to explore various aspects of web activity among representatives of the digital generation, concerns and perceptions surrounding pervasiveness of web 2.0 in their lives from three main facets namely technology aptitudes, patterns in web usage, perceptions of trust and privacy in social web. He then concludes that "learners seem to have developed a social world that is parallel to their everyday work and study activities".(Benson ,2008,pp.447)

The characteristics of the successful online learner provided by some Web sites, such as self-motivation, self-discipline, being self-directed, having good organization and time management skills, commitment, ability to adapt to new learning environments, and pro-activeness, could usually be suggested as a benchmark against which it is possible to assess one’s readiness for online learning.(Teja and Spannaus, 2008, pp.193) Meanwhile, three main skills including computer literacy, management skills and communication skills are analized to distinguish them from those skills required in the f2f setting.

Liaw and Huang (2007) pointed out that when developing elearning environment, learners’ characteristics and other four critical elements (environmental characteristics, environmental satisfaction, collaborative activities, and environmental acceptance) should be considered.

When doing the research in understanding student attitudes towards using group work and group based technology in a higher education environment,Hogarth(2008) found that in general the respondents seem totally confused as to what ICT/Groupware is and largely unaware of the importance of them.(Hogarth,2008,pp.263)

  2. I would be interested in conducting research into the effectiveness of Interactive Whiteboards in primary education and to examine the methods that can be used to enhance efeectiveness.

  3. Another topic I am interested in is defining what comprises 'good practice' in the use of online learning such as that supported by the adoption of Moodle.

  4. I agree with "Digital generation are familiar with most of them in daily life but frequently using them in entertaining way rather than educational way." We may use facebook everyday every hour but we may not use it for learning. And the other problem is could I focus on elearning by using facebook? Just like could I learn in a game centre or playground?

  5. That's why informal learning now is gaining its high reputation. And that's why Jay Cross tries every effort to popularize the concept and practice of informal learning.
